Anthropology Weekly – the week of 26 July to 1 August 2026

A million and a half years ago, on the soft mud of a lakeshore in northern Kenya, a group of eight walked past one after another, and the ground kept the record. No tools, no bones, no skull in the sediment – only the shape of their feet, held for 1.4 million years until someone thought to look. That discovery, published this week, is where I want to begin.
The seven days just gone had a single idea running under them: recognition. Who gets counted, who gets remembered, who is asked to help decide their own future, and who is still shut out. It runs through the footprints of a hominin we had underestimated, through two lost populations found hiding in our own cells, through a conference in Ranchi and a memorandum in Delhi, and through a cluster of villages in the Malwa where a community is still fighting a name the British gave it. Here are the five developments, and where each one sits in your syllabus.
The large-bodied walkers of Lake Turkana
On 27 July, PNAS published a study I would keep close for any evolution answer. A team led by Kevin Hatala of Chatham University, with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Neil Roach of Harvard, Kay Behrensmeyer of the Smithsonian and Purity Kiura of the National Museums of Kenya, examined a set of fossil footprints from the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. The tracks are 1.4 million years old, and the team attributes them to Paranthropus boisei.
That attribution matters. Paranthropus boisei is the “Nutcracker Man”, the robust australopithecine that Mary and Louis Leakey recovered from Olduvai Gorge in 1959 and first named Zinjanthropus boisei – the huge grinding molars, the flaring cheekbones, the sagittal crest anchoring heavy chewing muscles. For decades the textbook treated him as a small-bodied dietary specialist built for chewing tough C4 plants, a side-branch that died out.
The footprints revise that. From the size of the impressions, the anatomy of the foot and the stride pattern, the team estimates individuals up to 1.8 metres tall and around 75 kilograms – a body in the same range as the Homo erectus who shared the same lakeshores. The earlier picture had him far smaller.
There is more in the trackway than body size. Eight individuals, mostly adult males, appear to have moved together, without females or juveniles. A footprint is a behavioural fossil in a way a skull is not: a skull tells you what an animal ate, a trackway tells you what it did. A band of adult males travelling as a unit points to a social structure – cooperation for safety, perhaps competition for mates – the kind of inference we could previously draw only from comparative primate behaviour. This is the tradition Sherwood Washburn called the “New Physical Anthropology”, the shift from measuring bones to reconstructing behaviour, and it rests on comparative work like Jane Goodall’s at Gombe.
The method has a lineage of its own. Mary Leakey again, and the Laetoli footprints in Tanzania in 1978 – the 3.6-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis prints that showed bipedalism arrived long before a large brain. The Turkana find belongs to that same trace-fossil study, the patient reading of a single preserved moment.

Paper 1, 1.6 (Plio-Pleistocene hominids – the South and East African australopithecines, here Paranthropus/Zinjanthropus boisei) is the primary anchor. Bring in 1.4 (human evolution and its theories) for the body-size and adaptation argument, 1.5 (primate behaviour and the comparative anatomy of man and apes) for the reconstruction of group life, and 1.8 (prehistoric archaeology and dating) for the ichnofossil evidence and the Early Stone Age context. Scholars to name: Louis and Mary Leakey (Olduvai 1959; Laetoli 1978), Raymond Dart (Taung, 1924) and Robert Broom (the robust forms of South Africa) for the discovery story, and Sherwood Washburn for the behavioural turn.
Two unknown ancestors in our DNA
On 30 July, the University of California, Berkeley reported a genetics study in Science that is likely to be significant for years. The lead author is Yulin Zhang, working with Arjun Biddanda and the population geneticist Priya Moorjani, and they built a new method worth naming: TRACE, for TRacking Archaic Contributions via ARG Estimation.
The method is the clever part. Proving that an extinct human population interbred with us used to require their ancient DNA – a Neanderthal genome, a Denisovan finger bone – to compare against. TRACE needs no ancient sample. It reconstructs the genealogical history inside living human genomes and identifies, from the branching pattern, where a stranger’s DNA entered. It finds the shadow rather than the body.
It found two. The first is a “ghost” population that split from our line around 800,000 years ago – a depth similar to the Neanderthal-Denisovan divergence – and later interbred with modern humans in Africa, before 50,000 years ago. This ancestry is present in everyone alive today, African and non-African alike, at roughly 0.5 to 1 percent of the genome. The second is older, a “super-archaic” lineage going back some 1.8 million years, which mixed into the Denisovans in Eurasia and reached some living people that way, most visibly in Oceania. Together with the Neanderthal and Denisovan contributions already known, the study describes early modern humans interbreeding with at least four distinct hominin lineages. About 2 percent of the modern genome is archaic in origin.
The borrowed segments cluster in genes for immunity and metabolism. Moorjani reads this as evidence that mixing with older populations gave us ready-made adaptations – defences against new pathogens, ways of handling new foods – as our ancestors moved into unfamiliar country.
The theoretical payoff is what an examiner rewards. The argument about our origins was long a straight contest. On one side, the Recent African Origin or “Out of Africa” model associated with Chris Stringer: a single recent African origin and a clean replacement of everyone else. On the other, the Multiregional model of Milford Wolpoff and Alan Thorne: continuity and gene flow across the Old World. Since 2010, when Svante Pääbo’s team sequenced the Neanderthal genome and then read Denisovan DNA from a single Siberian cave, the clean version has steadily weakened. This study pushes further. Moorjani’s own description is the line to quote: human evolution looks less like a “branching tree” and more like “a complex web of populations connected by repeated episodes of migration and mixing”. The term for that is reticulate evolution – a braided river rather than a tree.

Paper 1, 9 (Human Genetics – its methods, the study of gene flow and admixture, molecular anthropology) is the core. Tie it to 1.4 (theories of human evolution) to stage the Out-of-Africa versus Multiregional debate and its move towards an assimilation or network model. Names to carry: Chris Stringer for Recent African Origin, Wolpoff and Thorne for Multiregionalism, and Svante Pääbo and David Reich for the ancient-DNA revolution (the Neanderthal genome and the Denisovans, 2010). The term “reticulate evolution” and Moorjani’s “web, not a tree” are the framing lines.
The Pahariyas ask for a place at the table
The third development is closer to home. On 27 and 28 July, Ranchi hosted a two-day national conference of the Pahariya people – one of India’s Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups – bringing together more than 150 representatives from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha. The Pahariyas live in the Rajmahal Hills of the Santhal Pargana – Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda and Dumka – and their message was direct. They are tired of being the objects of welfare and want to be its authors: a seat at the policy table, and a shift from schemes handed down to planning led from within the community.
The Pahariyas carry particular weight in our subject, and the detail is worth getting right. The major ethnography of this exact people is L.P. Vidyarthi’s The Maler: A Study in Nature-Man-Spirit Complex of a Hill Tribe in Bihar (1963) – the Maler being the Sauria Pahariya. It was from fieldwork in these hills that Vidyarthi developed the Nature-Man-Spirit Complex, his argument that in a tribal world the natural environment, the human community and the supernatural order form one continuous whole rather than three separate compartments.
When the Pahariyas today insist that development must start from their own relationship with forest and land, they are restating what Vidyarthi documented sixty years ago. That is the connection to make in an answer.
The category itself has a history; “PVTG” did not appear overnight. The Dhebar Commission (1960–61) first noted that within the Scheduled Tribes lay an inner group far more vulnerable than the rest. In 1975 the government created a separate category, the Primitive Tribal Groups, defined by four criteria: a pre-agricultural level of technology, very low literacy, a stagnant or declining population, and general economic backwardness. Seventy-five groups were eventually listed. In 2006 the word “Primitive” was replaced, and they became Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. The Pahariyas are one of them. Against that fifty-year background, the shift in this week’s demand is clear: from communities named by the state to communities asking to plan with it.
This is also the oldest debate in Indian anthropology, still alive. Verrier Elwin, from his years among the Baiga and the Bondo – The Baiga (1939), Bondo Highlander, The Religion of an Indian Tribe – argued for protection and for giving tribes room and time, a position critics reduced to keeping them in a “National Park”. G.S. Ghurye, in The Scheduled Tribes, called them “Backward Hindus” and pressed for assimilation.
The Pahariya conference is neither: it is a demand for self-determination, and an answer should say so. For the way forward, the Xaxa Committee (2014) reviewed the condition of India’s tribes and argued for exactly this kind of agency, and the legal framework is PESA (1996), which grew out of the Bhuria Committee and made the Gram Sabha the unit of self-rule in Scheduled Areas, alongside the Forest Rights Act (2006).

Paper 2, 9.1 (tribal administration and policy – PESA, FRA, and the PTG/PVTG programmes) is the anchor. Bring in 6.1 (the tribal situation in India and its classification) for the PVTG category itself, 6.2(tribal problems, including land) and 6.3 (development, displacement and forest policy) for the grievances, and 3.3 (the Nature-Man-Spirit Complex) for the Vidyarthi connection. Scholars: L.P. Vidyarthi (The Maler, 1963) above all, the Elwin–Ghurye debate for framing, and the Dhebar Commission, Bhuria Committee and Xaxa Committee for the policy genealogy.
Crediting the healers
The fourth development pairs closely with the third. On 29 July the Ministry of Tribal Affairs signed a three-year memorandum with the CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute in Lucknow. On its face it concerns the conservation of Rare, Endangered and Threatened medicinal plants. In substance it is about knowledge, and who owns it.
Under the memorandum, NBRI will run field surveys and ethnobotanical assessments, conserve threatened medicinal species through tissue culture and seed banks, and train tribal youth in plant propagation. The safeguard is the part to underline. Every research activity requires the Prior Informed Consent of the concerned Gram Sabhas, in keeping with the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Intellectual property is to be jointly owned and equitably shared with the communities, with returns flowing through the National and State Biodiversity Funds.
The significance is clear against the history of biopiracy. India spent years reclaiming patents that foreign firms had taken out on neem and on turmeric – knowledge held for centuries in tribal and rural India, then fenced off by others. The strongest counter-example to keep ready is the Kani tribe of the Western Ghats and the drug Jeevani. Scientists at the Tropical Botanic Garden in Kerala learned of the plant arogyapaacha from Kani guides in the 1980s, developed it into a tonic, and shared the resulting royalties back with the tribe through a trust fund – the first arrangement of its kind in India. This memorandum takes the same principle of consent, credit and a share of the returns, and writes it into national policy.
There is a quieter point underneath. When the state agrees that tribal knowledge of plants and healing is knowledge worth conserving and paying for, it concedes what anthropologists have long argued: that a Baiga healer’s map of the forest is a knowledge system, not superstition. That is Vidyarthi’s Nature-Man-Spirit Complex again, now with a benefit-sharing clause attached.

Paper 2, 9.1 (tribal policy and programmes) is central. Bring in 3.3 (Nature-Man-Spirit Complex) and the anthropology of indigenous knowledge for the ethnobotany, and 6.3 (development and forest policy) for the conservation angle. The Kani–Jeevani case and the neem and turmeric patent battles are the ready-made examples; Vidyarthi again for the framing that tribal ecological knowledge is a system in its own right.
What a colonial label leaves behind
The last story is a case study in how a name given long ago can still shape a community’s present. On 1 August, The Hindu carried a ground report on the Banchhada of western Madhya Pradesh – about 25,000 people across 78 villages in the Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam districts.
The Banchhada were once a nomadic community of the Malwa and Mewar tracts. Under the colonial Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 they were branded a “criminal tribe” – a label that treated a whole community as born offenders and placed it under permanent police surveillance. The Government of India de-notified them in 1952, and they are now a Scheduled Caste.
But the stigma outlived the law. Shut out of schooling, jobs and housing once their identity is known, many families were pushed toward, and then held in, caste-based sexual exploitation – a practice the report traces to coercion under the Raj that hardened, over generations, into a source of income. Many young people, born outside recorded marriages, cannot even obtain a caste certificate, which locks them out of the reservations and scholarships meant to help them.
One detail turns the usual picture on its head. Across much of poor India a son is treated as an economic asset and a daughter as a burden – a mindset that shows up in skewed sex ratios and in the everyday neglect of the girl child. Among the Banchhada the logic runs the other way. Because it is the daughter who is expected to earn, her birth is welcomed and she is often given better food, clothing and care than her brothers. This is not affection breaking free of patriarchy; it is the same economic calculation wearing the opposite face – the girl valued precisely because she is to be exploited. It is a sharp reminder that the “worth” a family places on a child is set by economic structure far more than by sentiment.
That is the pattern to carry from this. For the denotified tribes, the colonial “criminal” label became a self-perpetuating stigma, and the exploitation that follows is less an inherited “custom” than the residue of that history. The report also notes change coming from within – young people in the community organising to break the cycle and educate the next generation – which is where anthropology’s applied, action-oriented side matters most.

Paper 2, 7.1 (the exploitation and deprivation of the weaker sections and their constitutional safeguards – Article 23 against forced labour and trafficking, Article 46, the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956) is the anchor. Add 3.2 (the caste system and the tribe-caste continuum) for the journey from “criminal tribe” to Scheduled Caste, and 6.2 (tribal problems) for the denotified-tribe history. Scholars and anchors: Meena Radhakrishnan, Dishonoured by History (on the Criminal Tribes Act); and the Renke (2008) and Idate (2017) commissions on denotified tribes.
Pulling the week together
The five stories share the thread named at the start. A hominin written off as small and marginal turns out to have been tall, heavy and travelling in company. Two populations we never knew existed turn out to sit inside every one of us, having handed us some of our defences. A people studied and named for sixty years ask to stop being studied and start being consulted. A healer’s knowledge of a forest plant, long dismissed, is finally written into a contract that pays for it. And in the Malwa villages, a community the British branded criminal is still waiting for the recognition a Scheduled Caste certificate was meant to bring – though some of its young people have stopped waiting and are forcing the change themselves.
Each is a case of recognition arriving late, or not yet arriving at all. That pattern is useful in an answer. On human evolution, on genetics, on PVTGs, on tribal knowledge, or on the denotified tribes, the strongest closing move is often to show anthropology correcting its own earlier blindness – the tree becoming a web, the side-branch becoming a cousin, the “beneficiary” becoming an author, the “criminal” becoming a citizen. Carry the argument, and carry the specifics with it: that The Maler was written about the Sauria Pahariya, that Jeevani came from the Kani, that the Banchhada were de-notified in 1952, that the Turkana prints are 1.4 million years old.
One habit for the week: take one of these five down to its primary source – the paper or the report itself, not a summary. That is the difference between knowing about anthropology and being able to write it.
