Joan P. Mencher, the American anthropologist whose half-century of village fieldwork in Kerala and Tamil Nadu produced one of the sharpest materialist readings of caste, died in New York on 7 August 2026, aged 96; the Economic and Political Weekly carries a full tribute by A.M. The Indian Tribal reported the work of Suratha Kisan, an Adivasi farmer of Sundargarh district, Odisha, who over the past decade has built a community seed bank that now conserves more than 110 indigenous rice varieties, alongside 18 millet varieties, 6 pulses, 10 vegetables and 2 oilseeds. He began in 2014-15 with 35 rice landraces and founded the Singha Bahini Seed Bank with support from the Desi Bihaana Suraksha Manch, a network for the protection of native seed. The bank runs on a loan-and-return rule: a farmer borrows seed and returns the borrowed quantity with a surplus after harvest, so the stock grows as it circulates, and about 80 farmers now participate actively. The report’s economics are concrete: cultivating these landraces costs roughly ₹3,000-4,000 an acre against ₹6,000-8,000 for high-yielding varieties with their fertiliser and pesticide load, and the desi varieties tolerate drought and pests that damage the HYVs. “We now have around 110 rice varieties in our seed bank,” Kisan says, adding that the crops “can withstand climate change effects.”
